The Atkins Diet promise to you?

The Atkins Diet promises to turn your body into a fat burning machine while at the same time allowing you to eat as much of the protein rich foods as you like (meat, cheese, and milk products). They also claim to boost your energy and decrease sugar cravings. The people behind Atkins teach people that sugars and empty carbs cause cravings. They teach people to identify the foods that are causing stored fat and weight gain so that they can be eliminated or greatly reduced from the diet. They want people to understand what they are eating and how if affects their body.

The Theory and Details Behind the Atkins Diet

Atkins is a low carbohydrate, high-protein diet. It is based on the fact that the body uses carbohydrates as its main source of energy. By cutting out the carbohydrates from your diet, your body is forced to use other substances as energy.

The theory behind Atkins is that the body will turn to fat that has been stored in the body cells for energy. If the body is burning fat instead of carbs, the body loses weight more quickly. People on the Atkins diet have more energy. When carbohydrates enter the body they are turned into glucose (sugar) which is transported throughout the body to be converted into energy.

The rise in glucose also causes the body to release insulin, which works as a sugar stabilizer. This process creates the highs and lows in energy levels. By consuming fewer carbohydrates and eliminating simple carbs, blood sugar levels become more even. Atkins also eliminates mood swings.

The same process that steadies energy levels also decreases mood swings. By eating a high fiber diet, sugar levels are kept more consistent, preventing the dramatic ups and downs in blood sugar levels.

Atkins can help get rid the body of food cravings. Atkins encourages people to stop consuming processed carbohydrates, simple sugars, and starchy foods. It helps them get their cravings under control. Atkins is for people who prefer a diet that includes lots of meat. The Atkins diet allows you to eat meat, butter, cheese and dairy products almost as much as you want. It is shown that men tend to use this diet most and that it is especially effective in ridding them of their beer bellies.

What Health Care Professionals Say About the Atkins Diet

A study published by the New England Journal of Medicine (Nov. 25, 2010) found that those who increased their protein consumption and decreased the amount of simple carbohydrates eaten lost weight faster than those who didn't and maintained a more consistent blood sugar level.

Another study found that those who followed the Atkins diet vs. those who followed a conventional diet, lost more weight at the 3 and 6 month weigh-in. However, at the 12 month weigh-in, the total weight loss of those on the Atkins diet and those on a conventional diet had evened out.

Dr. Joel Fuhrman said, "The Atkins diet does not provide adequate nutrition.Atkins dieters are advised to take dietary supplements, but this may not make up for the limitations on healthy foods including whole grains, vegetables and fruits that provide vitamins and minerals not found in high-protein foods."
