How does the CRON diet work? CRON stands for Calorie Restricion with Optimal Nutrition. The diet works on the scientific basis that the amount of calories being consumed must be less than the amount of calories being used in order to lose weight. The Theory and Details Behind The CRON Diet

The CRON diet, also called the CR diet, Anti-Aging Diet, or Longevity Diet, stands for Calorie Restrict with Optimal Nutrition. Dr. Walford discovered many of the principles behind this diet during his work on Bioshpere 2 and through extensive animal testing. The theory behind the CRON diet is that each individual has a specific weight that provides them with the best health. This is the optimal or goal weight. The goal weight is determined by using the current weight and body fat content (which can be found using a Fat-O-Meter). Once the goal weight has been determined, you are directed to lose weight at a slow and steady pace, no more than 2% of your body weight a month. Weight loss is achieved by limiting your calories and making sure that the calories you eat give you the best nutrition possible.

The average individual is instructed to eat about 1800 calories a day, spread over three meals. However, it can be adapted to fit a lifestyle that requires more than three meals a day. Once a week, the CRON diet instructs dieters to make 8 meals and freeze them for use throughout the week. These meals have ingredients that are super-charged with nutrients. These meals are to be eaten, one a day. The other 2 courses of the day can be planned by the individual. They must be planned carefully and meet all the nutrition requirements of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA). The CRON diet does not have a specific exercise plan, but it does recommend a healthy amount of exercise every day to increase the health benefits of the diet.

What Health Care Professionals Say About The CRON Diet

Dr. Roy Walford, a prominent Gerontologist from UCLA, spent 2 years on the Bioshpere 2 project at the University of Arizona. He and several others were enclosed for 2 years in a controlled biodome habitat where they conducted various research and were fed a high-nutrient, low-calorie diet. While on the diet, Dr. Walford and the others lost considerable amounts of weight and experienced improved health signals. Dr. Walford spent several decades testing mice to learn the effects of this low-calorie, high-nutrient diet on their longevity and health. His testing showed that eating fewer calories that held high levels of nutrients extended the life of the mice. Not only did they live longer than those fed other diets, but they had significantly better health.

Similar studies done by Dr. Richard Weindruch, found that the life expectancy of mice was increased 34% when they were fed 50% less calories, but given the same amount of proteins, vitamins, and minerals. The occurrence of tumors in the mice was reduced by 40% in those fed a calorie restricted diet.

Similar studies have been done on adult monkeys. Results were similar to those of the mice.
